About the role
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment invites applications for the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) scheme for the 2026-27 academic session. This central government initiative provides 125 fully funded slots for students pursuing accredited master's degree and Ph.D. programmes abroad. The scheme specifically supports candidates from Scheduled Castes (115 seats), De-notified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (6 seats), and children of landless farm workers or traditional craftspersons (4 seats). Thirty percent of all slots are earmarked for women. Selected scholars receive funding covering full tuition fees, contingency grants, air travel, and annual living expenses disbursed through Indian Missions abroad. If you have secured or applied for admission at an accredited international university, hold at least 60% marks in your qualifying degree, and satisfy the household income limit, submit your verified documents through the official portal before the deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible to apply for the NOS scheme?
Candidates from Scheduled Castes, De-notified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, or families of landless agricultural labourers and traditional artisans are eligible. Applicants must hold at least 60% marks or equivalent grade in their qualifying degree, be under 35 years of age, and meet the annual household income limit.
How much financial assistance does the scholarship provide?
The scholarship pays the full actual tuition fee charged by the overseas university. Additionally, it offers an annual maintenance allowance of approximately USD 15,400 in the United States or GBP 9,900 in the United Kingdom, local travel costs, airfare, visa fees, and required medical insurance.
Can candidates apply without an unconditional offer letter from a foreign university?
Candidates who have secured an unconditional admission offer from a recognized institution abroad are given first preference during selection. Those awaiting final admission may submit conditional offer letters, but final scholarship disbursal requires unconditional confirmation from an eligible foreign institution within the specified timeline.
How is the scholarship money disbursed to selected students?
Funds are not deposited directly into students' domestic bank accounts from Delhi. Instead, the Ministry transfers sanctioned funds to the Indian Mission in the host country. The respective Indian Embassy or High Commission then pays the university fees directly and releases maintenance stipends to the scholar.
Is there any application fee for submitting the NOS form?
No application fee is charged by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for applying to the National Overseas Scholarship. The entire registration and document submission process on the official portal is free of cost for all eligible applicants.
