Early Signs of Breast Cancer: Know the Changes, Act Early Breast cancer may not always cause symptoms in its early stages, which is why breast awareness and appropriate screening are important. If you notice any unusual or persistent change in your breast, don’t ignore it. Possible warning signs include: • A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm • Change in the size or shape of the breast • Dimpling, puckering, redness or other skin changes • Nipple turning inward or changing in appearance • Unusual nipple discharge, especially if blood-stained • Persistent swelling or pain in the breast or underarm Most breast changes are not cancer, but any new or unusual change should be evaluated by a doctor.
