🪨 How are kidney stones treated today? Modern kidney stone treatment is personalised, and not every stone requires surgery. Some small stones can be monitored and may pass naturally. Selected patients may benefit from medicines that assist stone passage, while certain uric acid stones may be treated with medically supervised dissolution therapy. Suitable stones may be treated using shock-wave lithotripsy, which fragments the stone from outside the body. Ureteroscopy or RIRS allows the urologist to reach the stone through the natural urinary passage and fragment it using laser technology.
