About Dutch Garden, Surat

Historic cemetery of seventeenth-century European trading outposts

  • Dutch Garden, located near Kataragam Gate, preserves the burial grounds of European merchants who lived in Surat during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
  • The Dutch and English East India companies established prominent trading factories here when Surat was India's primary export harbor.
  • The site features massive mausoleums built with pointed domes, carved pillars, and vaulted ceilings that borrow heavily from contemporary Islamic tomb architecture rather than European churchyard designs.
  • The largest structure belongs to Baron Adriaan van Reede, a VOC director who died in 1691.
  • Visitors can walk paved pathways between the weathered brick tombs and adjacent Anglican graves.
  • The cooler months between November and February offer the most comfortable conditions for walking through the unshaded grounds.
