Q. Do all men with prostate cancer need to get their testicles removed surgically? Is it really necessary? A. Short answer - NO. While most men with prostate cancer do require hormone therapy of various durations as a part of treatment, this does not necessarily have to be achieved through surgical removal of the testicles. Surgical removal of testicles confers lifelong testosterone suppression - which has a long list of side effects of it's own, and may not actually be required. Hormone therapy can be administered via injections or pills and its duration can be controlled and limited, allowing men to preserve their body image and self-esteem.
