Safeguarding Children Against Flu During the Monsoon Season A practical guide for parents The monsoon brings welcome relief from the heat, but it can also bring an increase in respiratory infections among children. Influenza (flu) is a contagious viral infection that can cause fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, tiredness and sometimes vomiting or diarrhoea in children. In tropical countries such as India, influenza can circulate throughout the year, with periods of increased activity rather than one fixed “flu season.” The good news is that parents can take several simple steps to reduce the risk of influenza and, importantly, reduce the chances of severe illness. 1. Vaccination is the best protection The annual influenza vaccine is the most effective way to protect children against flu and its complications. Influenza viruses change over time, which is why vaccination is recommended every year. Vaccination is particularly important for: Children below 5 years, especially those below 2 years Children with asthma or chronic lung disease Children with heart disease or other chronic medical conditions Children with weakened immunity Children living with family members who are at higher risk of complications The influenza vaccine cannot cause influenza. Protection develops over approximately two weeks after vaccination. Parents should discuss the appropriate influenza vaccination schedule for their child with their pediatrician. 2.
