Massive beehive-shaped granary overlooking the Ganges

• Golghar stands near Gandhi Maidan in central Patna.
• British engineer Captain John Garstin built this massive beehive-shaped granary in 1786 following the devastating Bengal famine of 1770 to store emergency grain reserves.
• It rises twenty-nine metres high without internal pillars, featuring dual spiral staircases of 145 steps wrapping around the outside.
• Grain porters once carried sacks up one side, dropped the load through an opening at the summit, and descended down the opposite side.
• The top platform offers direct views across Patna city and the Ganges river.
• Visitors cannot enter the interior, but climbing the exterior stairs remains the primary draw.
• October to March brings pleasant weather for the outdoor climb.
• Gates generally open daily between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM with a nominal entry ticket.
