Proton Therapy vs Linear Accelerator (LINAC): Why to choose Linac based cancer treatments Proton therapy is often promoted as a highly advanced form of radiation treatment, but it is important to understand its limitations when compared to conventional linear accelerator (LINAC)-based radiotherapy. One of the primary drawbacks of proton therapy is its significantly higher cost, which can limit accessibility for many patients. In contrast, LINAC therapy, including techniques such as IMRT and VMAT, is widely available and more cost-effective. Another limitation is the sensitivity of proton therapy to anatomical changes and patient movement. Even small variations in tumor position or body anatomy can affect dose distribution, potentially impacting treatment accuracy. LINAC-based therapies are generally more robust and adaptable, with advanced image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) allowing precise daily adjustments. Additionally, proton therapy facilities are limited in number, leading to longer waiting times and travel burdens for patients. Clinical evidence comparing outcomes between proton therapy and modern photon-based LINAC treatments is still evolving, with many cancers showing comparable results.
