It occurs when the facial nerve, also known as the seventh cranial nerve, is affected. Since this nerve controls facial movements, taste sensation from part of the tongue, and some functions related to the eyes and ears, facial palsy can significantly affect a person's appearance, communication, eating, and daily activities. Facial palsy can develop suddenly or gradually. Although it can be frightening, many people recover significantly, particularly when the underlying cause is identified and treatment is started appropriately. What Is Facial Palsy? The facial nerve travels from the brain through a narrow passage in the skull before reaching the muscles of the face. If the nerve becomes inflamed, compressed, infected, injured, or damaged, facial movement may be affected. Facial palsy may cause difficulty smiling, closing one eye, raising the eyebrows, or moving the affected side of the mouth. Depending on the cause, other symptoms may also occur. One of the most common causes of sudden facial weakness is Bell's palsy, a condition in which the facial nerve becomes inflamed.
