Five-story pink sandstone palace of lattice windows
- Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built Hawa Mahal in 1799 along the edge of Jaipur's central bazaar.
- Designed by Lal Chand Ustad, the five-storey pink sandstone facade served as an extension of the nearby City Palace.
- Its primary function was permitting royal women to watch street festivals and daily market life without breaking purdah customs.
- The facade features 953 small casements, known as jharokhas, carved with stone latticework that channels cooling air through the narrow interiors.
- Behind the screen wall, the structure contains ramps instead of staircases to access the top floors, alongside small chambers lined with colored glass panels.
- Mornings between October and March offer clear light on the eastern front.
- The monument opens daily between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Entry tickets cost 50 rupees for Indian tourists and 200 rupees for international visitors.
