Hilltop fortress known for red sandstone and courtyards

• Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, Amber Fort sits high on a ridge above Maota Lake in Amer, eleven kilometres north of Jaipur.
• It served as the royal seat of the Kachwaha Rajputs until the capital moved downhill in 1727.
• Inside, four terraced courtyards connect state rooms and private quarters made of pale yellow and pink sandstone.
• Key areas include the Diwan-e-Aam with its carved stone pillars, the multi-level Ganesh Pol gateway, and the Sheesh Mahal, where small concave mirrors inset across the walls reflect minimal light.
• Visit from October to March when daytime temperatures stay moderate.
• The gates remain open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with evening tours running after 6:30 PM.
• Standard entry costs 100 rupees for Indian nationals and 500 rupees for international visitors.
