WHEN IS IT TIME TO START USING A CANE? Don’t decide by age. Decide by function. Many older adults resist using a cane because they feel, “I’m not old enough for a walking stick.” But a cane is not a sign of ageing. Used at the right time, it is a tool for safer and more confident mobility. Consider an assessment for a cane if you notice: 🔹 Holding onto furniture while walking around the house 🔹 Unsteady walking — wobbling, shuffling or poor balance 🔹 A recent fall or near-fall 🔹 Hip or knee pain affecting the way you walk 🔹 Weakness in one leg 🔹 Fear of falling that makes you avoid walking or going outdoors USING A CANE CORRECTLY MATTERS 📏 Correct height: When standing upright with your arm relaxed, the handle should be approximately at the level of your wrist crease, allowing a slight bend at the elbow. 🖐️ Which hand? Usually, hold the cane in the hand opposite the painful or weaker leg. 🦯 Choose the right support: A single-tip cane may be sufficient for mild pain or instability. More significant balance problems may require a quad cane or walker after proper assessment. Most importantly, don’t wait for a serious fall before considering walking support. A cane does not take away independence. Sometimes, it is what helps you preserve it.
