This quiet stone complex contains the sixteenth-century tombs of the classical Hindustani musician Tansen and his Sufi spiritual teacher, Mohammad Ghaus.
Akbar built the larger mausoleum for Ghaus, distinguished by an octagonal chamber, shaded verandas, and delicate pierced stone screens that filter the afternoon light.
Tansen's resting place stands beside it as a simple, open pillared pavilion built in clean Mughal lines.
Next to the singer's platform grows a tamarind tree; local vocalists still chew its bitter leaves in the traditional belief that it purifies the voice.
Every December, national classical musicians gather on the grounds for the multi-day Tansen Samaroh festival.
