About Dr Nitin Rawal
Child Meniscus Tear – Does It Always Need Surgery? A meniscus tear in a child or young athlete needs careful evaluation because the meniscus is important for protecting the knee and preventing future joint problems. Does every meniscus tear need surgery? Not necessarily. The treatment depends on the type and location of the tear, symptoms, age, activity level, and whether the knee is locking or unstable. Surgery may be considered when there is: • A displaced or unstable tear • Repeated knee locking or catching • Persistent pain or swelling despite appropriate treatment • A tear that is unlikely to heal on its own • An associated ACL or other ligament injury Whenever possible, my aim is to preserve and repair the meniscus rather than remove it, particularly in children and young athletes. Meniscus preservation can be important for the long-term health of the knee. If your child has knee pain or has been diagnosed with a meniscus tear on MRI, don’t assume surgery is automatically required. A clinical examination and review of the MRI are important before deciding the treatment. As a knee and sports injury specialist in Gurgaon, I assess each young athlete individually and recommend surgery only when it is genuinely beneficial.
