How to Check Blood Pressure Correctly Blood pressure is one of the simplest measurements for understanding cardiovascular health—but the technique used to measure it can affect the reading. For a more reliable home BP reading: • Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring. • Keep your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed. • Place your arm comfortably on a table with the cuff at heart level. • Use a properly fitting upper-arm cuff. • Avoid talking, moving or using your phone during measurement. • Take 2 readings about 1 minute apart and record them. • Avoid checking immediately after exercise, smoking or caffeine. A single high reading does not necessarily mean hypertension. Repeated measurements, symptoms, medical history and overall cardiovascular risk should be considered. If BP is very high and accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness/numbness, confusion or severe headache, seek urgent medical attention.
