What Happens During Asthma? When asthma symptoms are triggered, three main changes happen in the lungs that make it difficult to breathe: 1. Inflammation: The lining of the airways becomes swollen and irritated. 2. Bronchoconstriction: The muscles around the airways tighten, squeezing the tubes shut. 3. Mucus Production: The body produces thick mucus that can clog the narrowed airways. Common Symptoms Symptoms can vary from person to person and may be mild or severe. They often worsen at night or early in the morning. • Wheezing: A whistling or squeaky sound when you breathe out. • Coughing: Often persistent, especially at night or during exercise. • Shortness of Breath: Feeling like you can’t catch your breath or get enough air. • Chest Tightness: A feeling like something is squeezing or sitting on your chest.
