What is Lumbar Fusion Surgery, and When Is It Needed? Lumbar fusion is a surgical procedure used to stabilize the lower spine when there is painful instability or compression of the nerves. It is one of the treatment options and is recommended only for carefully selected patients. Common situations where lumbar fusion may be advised include spinal instability, spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra), certain recurrent disc problems, spinal deformity, fractures, infections, or degenerative conditions where decompression alone may not provide lasting stability. A common misconception is that lumbar fusion causes leg weakness or loss of bladder and bowel control. In most patients, this is not the case. The surgery is performed to relieve nerve compression and stabilize the spine, with the goal of reducing pain, improving function, and preventing further neurological deterioration. Equally important, delaying surgery when clearly indicated can have consequences. Some patients may remain end up on long-term pain medications, increasing the risk of side effects, including kidney problems. Progressive spinal nerve compression may also result in worsening neurogenic claudication (pain or heaviness in the legs while walking), increasing leg weakness, numbness, or, in severe cases, bladder and bowel dysfunction.
