Gout is a highly painful, inflammatory form of arthritis that occurs when excess uric acid builds up in the body and forms sharp, needle-like crystals in the joints. The symptoms usually present as sudden, severe episodes known as gout attacks or flares. Sudden, Intense Joint Pain: The pain is typically excruciating and peaks within the first 8 to 12 hours after it begins. It frequently strikes in the middle of the night or early morning, completely unprovoked. Tenderness: The affected area becomes so hypersensitive that even the lightest pressure—such as a bedsheet or a blanket resting on it—can feel completely intolerable. Extreme Swelling and Warmth: The joint swells up significantly and feels physically hot to the touch, as if it is "on fire." Redness and Discoloration: The skin over the joint becomes bright red, purplish, or shiny. (On darker skin tones, the redness might be more subtle, but the swelling and warmth remain distinct). Limited Range of Motion: As the inflammation intensifies, moving the affected joint or putting any weight on it becomes incredibly difficult or impossible. Jun 15, 2026
