Bhubaneswar's largest and most revered ancient shrine

• Lingaraj Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to Harihara, a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu.
• Built during the eleventh century by the Somavamshi dynasty, it represents the mature phase of Kalinga architecture with a central deula rising over fifty-five meters.
• The sprawling sandstone courtyard contains more than fifty smaller shrines, carved friezes, and the sacred Bindusagar tank situated just north of the complex.
• Only practicing Hindus are permitted inside the main sanctum, but an elevated viewing platform outside the northern perimeter wall gives other visitors a clear look across the compound.
• The temple opens daily around 6:00 AM and closes at 9:00 PM, with afternoon breaks for rituals.
• October through February brings cooler days that make exploring the stone grounds comfortable.
• Entry to the compound remains free of charge.
