Thyroid Function Tests: Small Test, Important Health Information The thyroid gland produces hormones that help regulate metabolism, energy levels, body temperature and several other body functions. Your doctor may recommend thyroid testing if you have symptoms such as persistent tiredness, unexplained weight changes, unusual sensitivity to heat or cold, hair or skin changes, menstrual irregularities or swelling in the neck. TSH is commonly used as an initial thyroid function test. Depending on the clinical situation, your doctor may also advise Free T4, Free T3 or thyroid antibody tests such as Anti-TPO. An abnormal thyroid test result should not be interpreted on its own. Results need to be considered together with symptoms, medical history, medicines and other relevant investigations.
