Mahatma Gandhi's base during the freedom struggle

• Mahatma Gandhi lived and worked at this ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati River between 1917 and 1930.
• He set out from here on the Dandi Salt March on 12 March 1930, vowing not to return until India gained independence.
• The compound preserves Hriday Kunj, the modest cottage Gandhi shared with Kasturba Gandhi, containing his original spinning wheel, writing desk, and simple kitchen.
• Visitors can walk through the museum gallery designed by architect Charles Correa, which holds thousands of original letters, photographs, and historical documents.
• The site also includes Nandini, an old guest house where national leaders stayed during visits.
• November to February offers cooler weather for walking the quiet, shaded riverside grounds.
• The ashram opens daily from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM with free admission for all visitors.
