Five-story underground reservoir built in 1498

• Queen Rudabai built this five-story deep subterranean water reservoir in 1498 to provide water and shelter for passing travelers and pilgrims.
• The sandstone structure drops downward through three entrance gates into a stepped corridor, keeping the subterranean interior roughly five degrees cooler than ground level outside.
• Sandstone columns, galleries, and wall friezes depict Hindu deities, floral borders, women churning buttermilk, and court musicians.
• Sunlight filters down directly through the central open octagonal shaft, shifting across the carved platforms as the day progresses.
• Visiting between November and February avoids the harsh summer heat common in northern Gujarat.
• The site opens daily between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM under the management of the Archaeological Survey of India, with a small admission ticket required for Indian and foreign nationals.
